Th-th-th-that's All Folks!

A good article to use for biodiversity: Tasmanian Devils disappearing! It could also tie in to several other topics, such as evolution & cancer.

Chemistry of Sleeplessness

http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/36392/title/FOR_KIDS_The_chemistry_of_sleeplessness

This is an interesting article which may be tied into the scientific method. It's got motivation - how many of our students are suffering from lack of sleep - and you can make up regents-style questions to use as a Do Now or during the lesson.

Welcome

Welcome to my very first blog! I am a 9th grade Living Environment (the subject formerly known as biology) teacher in Queens, NY. I came into teaching through the NYC Teaching Fellows, and am still trying to figure out if I enjoy it.

Why am I blogging, you may ask. Besides the fact that it's a requirement for my last Master's Degree class, I am interested in keeping up with the multitude of advances and discoveries in life sciences, and sharing them with others. When applicable, I would like to include ways to include these discoveries in teaching the Living Environment. There's a big push to include "motivation" in our lessons, and what could be more motivating than including real-life science? Well, besides paying the students to learn. ;-)

If you come across any interesting science articles that I may have overlooked, please feel free to contact me or to add them to my blog as comments.

Thank you for visiting my humble little blog.
